Surround Sound and TV with Samsung HT-X50?
I am about to buy a Samsung HT-X50. Before I do, I want to make sure that I can get 5.1 with tv. I know I will be able to with DVDs. I currently have a GE Home Theater system and I cannot get surround sound with tv on it. It doesn’t have that feature I guess. Does anyone know if I can get 5.1 with the Samsung HT-X50.

TV does not come with the six speakers you need for 5.1 sound. That can only come from the Audio Visual (AV) Receiver, the heart of your SAMSUNG System
The digital 5.1 sound is in the signal to the Cable Box and from the cable box. You would send the Cable box’ sound output to the SAMSUNG receiver via a digital cable. I note that the SAMSUNG only has an optical digital connection for an input so the Cable Box (which you did not identify my model number) has to have an optical digital audio output or you cannot get digital audio. Some cable boxes are very basic, and if yours is, you may need to upgrade to a better one with the optical digital output so you can match the input to your SAMSUNG.
The video would go from the Cable Box to a TV input based on what type of connection you would use. (Component or RCA cable). Component video is recommended and will give you the best picture. I hope your TV has that input on the back. (I assume it is an HD TV).
Thus, if you can make the audio connection via optical digital audio and component video you should be able to enjoy the full HDTV experience.
Sorry if this seems confusing but the system interface issues among TV, AV Receiver, and Cable Box and Cable Box Remote are not as straight forward as they seem. It is definitely not “Plug-and-Play”.
