Staining wood? Is it that simple?
I bought a used table/desk for my small apartment. It’s wooden but a very light color. Everything else that’s not black (my couch, TV, lamp) in that room is a dark wood color (even if not real wood)… a very deep dark wood color.
So this table really stands out. Can I stain/paint this table so that the wood looks much darker? What should I know before doing this? Is it just like painting? Or is thre more to it?
Sorry if this is a dumb question. This is my first non-college apartment so I’m more interested in making things look nice but I’ve never had a chance to be real handy with this kind of stuff.
Thanks
if the desk has some sort of finish on it, you will have to remove it by sanding it down or using a chemical stripper. once removed, select the stain that you want and try it on an indiscreet place of your desk to see if it matches well enough with the other items, if matching is important.
1. sand the item down to 150 or 220 grit.
2. remove dust by using a tack cloth, just wipe the entire item down, changing the wiping portion of the tack cloth as you go
3. apply stain using a rag or sponge brush ensuring that you equally cover it all.
4. wipe off excess stain. the longer you leave it on, the more it will penetrate and the darker it will be. suggest you do the desk in portions – top then sides then drawers, etc.
5. let dry, usually 24 hrs is enough
6. suggest you apply a topcoat of some sort – minwax wipe on poly is easy and looks good – satin, semigloss or gloss. i use satin topcoats
Ensure you match the correct type of stain to poly – if the stain is oil based, then use an oil poly, if the stain is water based, use a water based poly.
Like the poster below me stated, you can buy everything you need at lowes or home depot with the exception of a specific color of stain that they may not carry.
buying list: sand paper* (4 sheets each of 150 grit and 220 grit), 1 tack cloth, 1 can stain*, 1 can wipe on poly – about $30-$40
* – the amount and type of sandpaper is subject to size and roughness of grain.
* – the stain can be regular stain or gelstain (more expensive, but generally considered to look better)
