How do I connect my HD cable box to my computer?
I want to connect my HD cable box (with HDMI output) to my PC, so I can watch HDTV on my monitor, while still using the computer at the same time. I have Windows Vista and a powerful computer I built, I just need a card that will let me take the HDMI input and software that lets me view the signal in a small window on Windows Vista. I don’t need a TV tuner, because the cable box is the tuner.
Im not sure a device exists that lets you INPUT to your computer through the HDMI, though you could probably input to your monitor straight from the cable box. But remember, all HD video sent across the HDMI connection is encrypted by HDCP. HDCP is a DRM designed by a subsidiary of Intel. You will not be able to use the HDMI connection unless EVERY COMPONENT that handles the processing of the data is HDCP certified. This includes your monitor, video card (anything 8 series and above for Nvidia or 2k series and above for ATI), any media reader (your cable box is since it provides HDMI support, and your operating system (Vista is HDCP ready).
As far as software is concerned, I know Windows Media Center (included with Vista Home Premium and Ultimate) does NOT play HD content from HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray disks. In fact, the ONLY software to date that can decode HD movies using your computer is CyberLink’s Hi-Def Suite, so its a safe bet that receiving input from the cable box through the HDMI to your pc is not going to happen, though I’m not 100% sure.
Sorry this doesn’t really answer your question, but I still want you to be aware of HDCP before you sink a lot of money into HD. I bought an HD-DVD/Blu-Ray disk drive and only found out about HDCP after I was unable to play my HD movies (I have an HD monitor, but it was purchased before HDCP came out).
