usa network tv episodes burn notice
Typically I like to write about major issues in the world, and science. However; since I entered this article competition I have decided to expand my topics. My first order of business is to introduce those of you who have yet to see an episode, to Burn Notice. Burn notice can be viewed on the USA network. Seasons 1 and 2 are out on DVD, and the show is currently in its third season. I would also recommend checking out Hulu, where you can currently view episodes 10-13 of season 3. Anyone that knows there shows will notice the Hulk, Highway to Heaven, theme of a guy going around and helping people with their problems. Burn notice is that, but with a really cool twist.
The show introduces us to a character named Michael Weston. He is a spy working for the US government. While on a mission he receives a phone call telling him that there is a “Burn Notice” on him. A burn notice means that he has basically become too hot to handle and no one will touch him. Effectively, he is done in the spy business for the time being. They dump him in Miami where he must stay until he finds out what agency burned him. He has no work history, credit history, nothing. The government has frozen all of his assets and resources, forcing him to take whatever jobs that come his way. Given his particular set of skills, he takes to helping people for money, if they can afford it. At first it is not his idea, he kind of gets suckered into it at first by his mother, then his brother, and so on. Eventually people approach him for help, although in current episodes the jobs seem to be coming through Fiona and Sam. Fiona is his “Trigger happy Ex-Girlfriend”, and Sam is an ex spy buddy of his that currently resides in Miami. They did dump him in a convenient location. His mom lives there, Sam lives there, Fiona happens to be there, and I believe his brother was living there before he moves to Vegas.
Fiona is an IRA operative (played by Gabrielle Anwar); and who used to work with Michael and eventually became involved with him. Traditionally referred to as assets. An asset is a source of information in the intelligence community. She really helps drive the show, with her dark sense of humor and her willingness to blow anything and everything up. She and Sam are Michaels back up when he is on one of his jobs or is trying to find out who burned him. Sam is played by Bruce Campbell, an extremely under rated and under appreciated actor, in my opinion. From the first moment you see him in this role it is obvious that he is perfect for the part. Sam is a former Navy Seal and retired US spy. He likes to drink, but no matter how much he drinks he is always on the ball. He serves as the source of information for Michael. Whenever Michael needs intel on anyone or anything, Sam is the guy that can get it. Michael’s mother, Madeline Weston, is played by Sharon Gless. She is probably best known for playing Cagney, on Cagney & Lacey. Madeline is a chain smoking and manipulative character, who is hilarious to watch. She has a way of getting what she wants, and a bad habit of calling Michael at the most inopportune times. Michael has a younger brother who has a bit of a gambling problem, but gets his life together over the course of the series. He is in quite a few episodes and helps out Michael when he can, as well as throwing some work Michaels way.
The cast is very strong on this show. Jeffery Donovan is the life blood of this show. He plays his role as Michael Weston perfectly. He comes off as knowing what he is doing, while at the same time coming off as a regular guy. He seems to have no problem juggling his clients problems along with his own. Much of the show is spent going between his clients and trying to discover who or what agency burned him. Right from the start there is that connection between Michael and Fiona that you just know is going to develop into something in later episodes. I highly recommend this series to anyone that has not seen it. Every episode that you see will leave you wanting more.
